Quick answer: the easiest way to get a remote that works is to match the original remote's model number, or failing that, your TV's model number. Both are printed on labels: the remote's number is usually on the back or inside the battery compartment, and the TV's number is on the label on the back of the TV.
Where to find the model numbers
- Samsung: remote numbers start with BN59, for example BN59-01315A.
- LG: basic remotes often start with AKB; Magic Remotes have numbers such as MR21GA or MR25GN.
- Sony: remote numbers start with RMT or RMF.
- Vizio: remote numbers start with XRT.
- Roku TVs (TCL, Hisense, Onn and others) use Roku remotes, while the same brands' Google TV models use different remotes. Check which system your TV runs.
IR, Bluetooth and voice remotes
A basic infrared (IR) remote works as soon as batteries are in, but needs a clear line of sight to the TV. Bluetooth and voice remotes need to be paired with the TV first, and voice features work only if the TV supports that voice service. If you only need power, volume, inputs and menus, an IR replacement is the simplest option.
Exact replacement or universal?
An exact replacement duplicates your original buttons, including app shortcuts. A universal remote can run several devices, such as the TV, a soundbar and a streaming player, but usually needs a setup code and may not support every smart-TV feature. For a single TV, an exact replacement is usually easier; for a home theater setup, a universal remote saves juggling.

Frequently asked questions
My new remote does nothing. What should I check?
Check the batteries and their orientation first. For Bluetooth or voice remotes, follow the pairing steps in the listing; many TVs need the remote to be held near the TV while pairing. For IR remotes, make sure nothing blocks the sensor on the TV.
Do replacement remotes need programming?
Exact replacements for one brand usually work without setup. Universal remotes typically need a code or an automatic code search.
What if it does not work with my TV?
Compare the remote and TV model numbers in the listing first. You can start a return within 30 days of purchase, and returns for a defective, damaged or wrong item are free.
